Mullein Tea Coarse Leaf

Mullein Tea Coarse Leaf

Mullein leaf comes from soft, downy rosette leaves of Verbascum thapsus - a tall wildflower long used in European folk blends for a mild cup.

We recommend the use of our tea bags with this particular herbal tea.

Unlike sharp mint or hot chai herbs, mullein is all about texture and calm: The leaves are a source of natural mucilage - gel-like plant polySaccharides - that form a mild, coating infusion popular with "throat and chest teas."

The flavour is subtle - meadow herbal with a hint of sweetness - so it works well on its own or as the base for brighter partners such as lemon peel/thyme or honey.

Most formal monographs discuss mullein flowers for traditional cough/throat relief, but the leaf is the common tea ingredient; modern lab studies using mullein leaf extracts report antimicrobial as well as anti-inflammatory activity, which explains its long-standing use in respiratory blends despite the lack of human trials.

Practically speaking mullein leaf brews easily, has no caffeine and is forgiving - long steeps are not bitter. Do strain finely through a mesh or coffee filter: tiny hairs on the leaf may be scratchy if they slip into the cup.

So if your brief is "quiet, comforting and mild on the palate," mullein leaf delivers.
